It's been four hundred years since a small group of humans and their vekornan allies mysteriously appeared on Terra, just in time to stop a rebellion that would have destroyed the planet. Now the mood of the people is turning against them, triggering violence and sabotage. While struggling against legislation that would ban them from Terra forever, they race to secure new defenses for the planet before time runs out. For they know that more vekorna are coming to Terra, and these ones plan to gather human slaves for their wars...

The story follows three families, as well as the alien vekorna and a government representative with a hidden agenda.

Jairon has been lost since his son Aderen, who left on a dangerous voyage to Rykol two hundred years ago. After harassment while racing his one-man needle-ship, he and his wife Kym leave for Saturn's moon Enceladus, where they will make a shocking discovery.

Kezim and his daughter Monera participate in the planetary government known as the Legion, where a retiring Legionnaire proposes harsh sanctions against the Rykolien Immigrants. Attacked by those who want him to leave Terra, Kezim investigates ancient hidden weapons on Moon, while Monera tries to water down the harmful legislation, distracted as memories of Aderen, her old lover, spring to the surface.

Rametin and his grand-daughter Nrabé patrol the outer reaches of the solar system, searching for a mysterious planet they know should exist. They watch in wonder as an ancient device comes to life before their eyes, until they are called back to join those who must leave Terra forever.
